Birdell Edna Olson, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017 at her home at the Lakeview Villas in Battle Lake.
She was born on April 26, 1931, on the family farm near Hillhead, SD, to Ole and Gudrun Olive (Smulan) Brubakken. She was baptized and confirmed at Trondhjem Lutheran Church and attended Labelle #3 country school and high school at Veblen, SD.
On March 13, 1948, she married Maynard Carlton Olson at his parent’s farm near Nashua. Birdell was a stay-at-home mom until all her children had started school, then she began her career of almost 50 years as a nurses aid. For over 40 of those years she was employed at the nursing home in Battle Lake.
Birdell and her husband, Maynard spent most of their adult lives living in the Battle Lake and Underwood area where they farmed and raised their family. Maynard also spent many years as a barber serving the area.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake and the Senior Citizens. Birdell enjoyed bowling, playing cards, horseshoes, cooking, raising flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband Maynard, her parents and four brothers; Ole, Carl, Roger and John.
Surviving Birdell are her children Nola (Irv) Sax of Dalton, Berton (Darlene) Olson of Battle Lake, Burl (Deb) Olson of Crestview, FL, Boyd (Bonnie) Olson of Clitherall and Steve (Cindy) Olson of Crookston; three brothers and a sister; Gardner (Norma) Brubakken of Two Harbors, Edwin (Joyce) Brubakken of Britton, SD, Harold Brubakken of Britton and Myrtle Hook of Hibbing; nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.
