Betty Mattfeld

Betty J. Mattfeld, 72, died Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at her home with her family by her side, under the care of Knute Nelson Hospice.

Betty Jane Mattson was born April 2, 1951 to Vernon and Doris (Anderson) Mattson in Detroit Lakes. She attended Lake Park High School, graduating in 1969.

On March 11, 1972 Betty married Richard Mattfeld in Hitterdal, MN.

Over the years Betty was a waitress, dental assistant, worked for Fargo Paper Company, was a stay-at-home mom for their children, and a special education paraprofessional for 33 years at the Underwood School. She retired in 2017.

Betty was most known for her love of children, sense of humor and her faith. She was a member of Sverdrup Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, interior decorating, shopping, floating in the lake, driving the wave runner, pontoon rides, and entertaining family and friends at the lake. Betty loved her family and friends dearly and was always thinking of others and how best to care for them.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Vernon and Doris Mattson, sister, Debra Hanson and nephew, Jesse Mattson.

Betty is survived by her husband, Richard Mattfeld of Underwood; her children, Brent Mattfeld (girlfriend, Amy Haugen) and Angela (Darby) Twardoski of Bismark, ND; grandchildren, Jacob Mattfeld (fiancé Suzie Thieschafer), Autumn Mattfeld, Shianna Runnigen-Mattfeld, Kade (Bailee) Amundson, Morgan Twardoski, and Michael Twardoski, and brothers, Robert (Julie) Mattson, Richard (Lisa) Mattson, and Roger (Laurie) Mattson and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care and Research Center.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Sverdrup Lutheran Church in Underwood, with visitation one-hour prior to the service at the church.
