Berton Melford Overgaard, 95, a longtime resident of rural Dalton, died Wednesday, January 02, 2008, at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He was born May 6, 1912, on the family farm in St. Olaf Township, rural Dalton, the son of Bernt and Maria Overgaard. He was baptized and confirmed at Kvam Lutheran Church, rural Dalton, Minnesota. He grew up on the farm, attended school at District #9, and lived on the farm until he became a resident of the Pioneer Home. On June 13, 1939, he married Ruby Bonde at Anoka, Minnesota. They resided on the farm near Dalton. Berton served on the Creamery Board and School District #9 Board, as well as the Kvam Church Board. He loved to hunt - especially deer, and was involved with the 4H Clubs. Farming was his life. In his retirement he began a new hobby owning and caring for his draft horses. Preceding him in death were his wife, Ruby, on January 1, 1989; two brothers, Archie and Bylered; two sisters, Alma Rydland and Margaret Tildahl; and a son-in-law, Dick Nidever. Survivors include his children: Maurice Overgaard of Ft. Collins, CO, Stanley and Shelley Overgaard of rural Dalton, Elaine Nidever of Reno, NV, and Roberta Overgaard of Santa Barbara, CA; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Luther Overgaard of the state of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a 6 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
