Bernard O. Vallevand, 81, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. He was born September 5, 1927, in Nidaros Township of Otter Tail County, the son of Martin and Bertha (Sandahl) Vallevand. He spent his younger years in the Vining and Clitherall areas where he attended school. He served in the U. S. Army from 1945 to 1947, serving in Iceland. On September 27, 1948, he married Betty Krog in Webster, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple resided in Fergus Falls. He began his employment at the Fergus Falls State Hospital in 1949, retiring in 1990 as a HSS. He then continued to work there on an on call basis for several years, working there for a total of 47 years. He also did part time work at Tysver Landscaping in Fergus Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Nidaros Lutheran Church and was currently a member there. Bernie enjoyed arrow head hunting in western North Dakota, fishing, and gardening. Preceding him in death were his wife, Betty, in 2003; a son, Eugene; a grandson, Kirk Foss; and his siblings: Marvel Vallevand, Violet Reindel, Carl Vallevand, Vivian Bjerkum, Mavis Wiseman, Elsie Teetzel and Clifford Vallevand. Survivors include two sons: Ronald Vallevand and Gary Vallevand, both of Fergus Falls; four daughters: Julie (Gary) Brevig of Rogers, MN, Diane Foss of Barnesville, MN, Sharon Vallevand of Fargo, ND, and Donna (Dean) Williams of Elbow Lake, MN; nine grandchildren: Carrie (Charlie) Browning, Tammy Brevig, Pam (Jeff) Maier, Cheri Foss, Amanda Foss, Nicholas Foss, Jamie (Deanna) Williams, Alisha Williams, and Ashley Williams; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon (Connie) Vallevand and Donald (friend Sandy) Vallevand, all of Fergus Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
