Arthur "Ernie" Sundberg

Arthur “Ernie” Sundberg, 99, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls.
He was born August 17, 1913, on the family farm in Orwell Township, the son of Nels and Emma (Larrson) Sundberg. He attended rural school and later graduated from Fergus Falls High School.
On September 4, 1937, he married Blanche E. Scott in Fergus Falls. They made their home in Fergus Falls, where Ernie was a baker, learning the trade at an early age at the Kaddatz Hotel. He joined the US Navy as a cook and transferred to the US Marines, serving in the Pacific Theater, stationed in the South Pacific at Okinawa and China. Upon his discharge, he returned to Fergus Falls where he became one of the owners of the Park Region Bakery, later known as Bunny Bread. He retired from there in 1976.
Ernie was a member of the VFW, Eagles and Augustana Lutheran Church, all of Fergus Falls. He enjoyed making picture frames and fishing decoys. He obtained his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying, cooking smelt for community fish fries, helping with the men’s French Toast breakfast at Augustana Lutheran, using his special recipe, was a baseball fan and was always willing to help people who needed it. Ernie loved to hunt pheasants and ducks on the Scott farm and always looked forward to deer hunting up north at the deer shack. He enjoyed spending time with his family, telling stories, having a good laugh, and summers on Wall Lake. There was nothing he liked better than a good hand shake!
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Ray and Walt.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda (Gary) Morical of Battle Lake; two sons, Brian (Tamra LaLonde) Sundberg of Fergus Falls and Bruce (Debra) Sundberg of Lake Havasu, AZ; eight grandchildren, Tobi, Jennifer, Kali, Erika, Elise, Alex, Andy and Robert; numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 pm Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 1 pm Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Augustana Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls
