Arlene C. Smith, 74, a resident of rural Underwood, died peacefully, Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at her home. She was born March 15, 1934, in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of Jeanette (Bach) and John Wolf. Arlene graduated from Snyder High School in Jersey City, NJ in June of 1952. On August 30, 1952, she married Walter W. Smith in Jersey City, NJ. They moved to Milford, CT and remained in CT until June of 1973 when they moved to Fergus Falls. Arlene and Walt moved to Underwood in 2000. She started working as a Nursing Assistant at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls and furthered her education as an LPN and RN, graduating from the Fergus Falls Community College Nursing Program in June of 1987. She retired in 2002 after 25 years of employment at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. Arlene was a very compassionate, caring, and diligent professional. Arlene was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and enjoyed quilting with the Messiah’s Women’s Group. She was also a member of the Underwood Woman’s Study Club, was an avid reader, which she passed on the love of reading to her family by giving books for gifts, and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Being around her family meant the world to her. She and Walter enjoyed winters in Orange Lake, Florida. Preceding her in death were her parents. Survivors include her husband, Walter; children, Wesley (Helena) of Seattle, WA, David (Virginia) of Lexington, KY, Jeanne Grenvik of Prior Lake, Leigh (Tom) Lake of Underwood and Dawn (Randy) Barker of Campbell; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a brother John (Pat) Wolf of Toms River, NJ. Visitation: 1-3 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 3 p.m. at the funeral home and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
