Amelia Ann Gates Rostedt, 99, of Moorhead, formerly of Kensington, MN, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Fergus Falls

She was born May 2, 1917 in Scranton, ND, to James Richard Gates and Lillian Amelia (Meyers) Gates. Her father ran flour mills in North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin before settling in Sheldon, ND, in 1924. Amelia’s mother taught school for many years. Amelia graduated from Sheldon High School in 1934 and then the family moved to Galesburg, ND. Amelia attended Mayville State Teachers College and graduated in 1944 with majors in English and Music. She taught and was a principal in various schools before securing a teaching position at Grand Forks Central High School, which was her favorite school to teach at.

In October, 1946, she met Elmer Charles Rostedt in Waubun, MN, where he and Amelia’s mother were teachers. The teachers would often go to the Red Apple Café in Mahnomen for pie and coffee where Amelia and Elmer met and were married six months later on June 10, 1947.

For the next several years, Amelia and Elmer located with their family to various communities to serve as teachers, principals and superintendents. In 1956, they settled in Kensington, MN, where Elmer was the Superintendent of Schools and Amelia stayed home to raise their three children.

Amelia’s interests were taking great care of her home, cooking wonderful meals for her family and traveling to their cabin on White Earth Lake near Waubun. She loved to travel all over the world with her son, Bill, and throughout the United States with Bill and her daughter, Mary. In later years, she loved to fish with her children, go for boat rides and spend holidays with her lake family.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Elmer who died in January, 1976.
Amelia is survived by her children, James “Dick” (Kathy) Rostedt of Sedona, AZ; Bill Rostedt of Moorhead, and Mary Rostedt of Fergus Falls; her grandchildren, Ann (Alex) Butler of El Cerrito, CA, and Mark (Joanna) Rostedt of Portsmouth, NH; and her great-grandchildren, Malcolm and Robert Butler, and Amelia “Mia” Rostedt.

In lieu of flowers the family will use memorials toward a chosen gift to donate to the Veteran’s Home in Fergus Falls, where Amelia lived for the last 16 months.

A private memorial service for immediate family will be held.
Interment will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, MN.
