Altha Edna Helen Schmidt

Altha Edna Helen Schmidt, 95, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, September 3, 2016, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

Altha was born on July 4, 1921, in Friberg Township, the daughter of Alfon and Frances (Schleske) Kugler. She was baptized at St. Paul’s East Friberg Church and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Altha grew up in Friberg Township where she attended country school District 159 #1469. Since 1967, Altha has been a longstanding member of the Federated Church in Fergus Falls.

On June 21, 1953, Altha married Delwyn Schmidt at the Federated Church in Fergus Falls. The couple resided in Fergus Falls for the remainder of their lives. This union was blessed with three children, Sheri, Steven and Sandy. Altha worked at Gambles, S&L, Montgomery Wards, Norby’s and Bon Jo’s, all of Fergus Falls.

Altha enjoyed gardening and canning the fruits of her labor, which were enjoyed by many. She loved tending to her flower gardens, playing cards, quilting, embroidery, sewing, crocheting and cooking. She liked to dance, with the polka being her favorite. She was well known for her caramel rolls and Bar-B-que ribs; she never visited her family without bringing her caramel rolls. She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very proud of her family and knew and lived with unconditional love.

Altha enjoyed her relationship with her Lord and welcomed her final journey to her Heavenly home, when our Precious Lord called her there.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delwyn Schmidt; her brothers, Jerry, Raymond, Harry and Ormon Kugler; her sisters, Irene (Henry) Rocholl, Iona (Inar) Norgren, Celia (Clifford) Norgren; sisters-in-law, Frances (Raymond) Kugler, Nora (Harry) Kugler and Myrna (Jerry) Kugler Saunders.

Altha is survived by her children, Sheri (Hank) Hemquist of Baxter, Steven Schmidt of Fergus Falls, and Sandy (Steve) Sundblad of Pelican Rapids; her grandchildren, Arik (Randina) Hemquist, Sara (Patrick) Goebel, Nicholas Schmidt, Tanner (Hope) Schmidt, Tina (Brent) Mckellips and Matthew Sundblad; great-grandchildren, Addison and Stella Hemquist, Leone and Georgia Goebel, Mackenzie and Parker Mckellips and Tarin, Kindle and Ryder Sundblad; a brother, Soren (Mavis) Kugler; two sisters-in-law, Elsie (Ormon) Kugler and Bonita (Chester) Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the Olson Funeral Home with a public prayer service at 6:30 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Service: 11:00 AM on Friday, September 9, 2016, at the Federated Church in Fergus Falls, MN.
