Alpha Stofer

Alpha Caroline Stofer, 98, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born January 6, 1912, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Martin and Anna (Jensen) Mortenson.  She grew up in Fergus Falls, graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1930. She attended St. Cloud State Teacher’s College and following graduation in 1934, taught at Garfield elementary in St. Cloud before moving to Minneapolis. On June 12, 1938, she married Kenneth Stofer in Minneapolis, Minnesota and raised seven children. Alpha resumed her teaching career in 1952 in a rural Sebeka school while living in Bluegrass. She continued her involvement in education after the family moved to Wadena in 1958. Upon retirement, she and Ken moved to Ottertail City. Following Ken’s death in 1982, Alpha returned to Fergus Falls in 1988. Alpha was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls and enjoyed bible study and women’s groups. She also enjoyed playing bridge and participating in community theater. She had a strong interest in A Center for the Arts. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Kenneth Stofer, and her sisters, Sadie Coninx, Mabel Mjelde, and Marian Barnes. Survivors include her children, Julie (Larry) Doth of Fridley, MN, Martin (Kay) Stofer of Anchorage, AK, Gregory (Sandy) Stofer of Burnsville, MN, Randall (Lu) Stofer of Denver, CO, Elaine (Glenn) Moulton of Torrance, CA, Bradley (Linda) Stofer of Denver, CO, and Dora Jimenez of Huntington Beach, CA, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
