Alice Ferguson

August 20, 1916 — February 29, 2012

Alice Irene “Nana” Ferguson, 95 1/2, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls. She was born August 20, 1916, at her parent’s home in Western Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Alice was the 4th of 12 children born to August and Emily (Sundberg) Anderson. She grew up and attended country school in the Fergus Falls area. Alice was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps, playing at the World’s Fair in New York City in 1937. Larsen’s Café in Fergus Falls was a sponsor for the Drum and Bugle Corps. Alice spent time at the café because of this sponsorship, and that is where she met Sherman Ferguson. They were married October 1, 1939 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. The couple farmed, and Alice was a homemaker, and assisted Sherman with his well drilling business. Sherman passed away suddenly on May 21, 1972, and Alice devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She worked at Children’s Corner as a cook and “nana” to all the children there. In later years, she assisted her family at Service Food as the “demo lady”, greeting the public with her warm and friendly smile. Alice was an awesome baker and cook. She is fondly remembered for her “potato dumpling day”, lefse, and caramel rolls. Bird watching, spending time outdoors, sewing potholders for everyone, and music were other favorite activities, and she was a lifelong yodeler. She became a resident of PioneerCare in 2010. Preceding her in death were her husband, Sherman; her parents; and siblings: Evelyn “Tootsie” Hanson, Helen Hanson, John “Jack” Anderson, Alvin “Pat” Anderson, Dorothy Kugler, Charles “Mike” Anderson, August “Jerry” Anderson, Hazel Olson, Mabel Anderson, and Marion Anderson. Survivors include her daughters: Sharon (Gary) Spies of Fergus Falls, and Jodie (Sid Fossan) Wells of Fergus Falls; her grandchildren: Shelly (Brian) Suckow of Fargo, Lana (Tim) Johnson of Fergus Falls, Amy (Kevin) King of Fergus Falls, Allisson (Jordan Shepherd) Wells of Fergus Falls, Emily Wells of Fargo, and Hannah (Billy) Lammers Olson of Underwood; her great-grandchildren: Andrew, Lauren, and Nicholas Johnson, Lydia, Claire and Josh Suckow, Ali (Jared) Haecherl, Max and Sam King, Kayla (Cass Vigen) Klimek, Gavin Wells, and Sophia Shepherd; a sister, Lucy (Jim Clark) Peterson of Vancouver, WA; sisters-in-law: Joyce Loberg of Detroit Lakes, Marie Anderson and Margie Anderson, both of Fergus Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
