Alexander Joseph “Joe” Stewart, 93, a resident of rural Underwood, died Friday, October 16, 2015, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.
He was born June 28, 1922, in Holdingford, Minnesota, the son of Alexander and Mary (Warsecka) Stewart. As a child, he moved to the Fergus Falls area, where he attended Fergus Falls Schools. On December 19, 1941, he married Pearl Marion Nelson in Fergus Falls.
In October of 1942, he joined the United States Army Air Force, where he was an airplane mechanic and was discharged in November of 1945.
He began his career with National Tea Corporation in Fergus, moving to Madison, WI, in 1958. In 1961, they moved to Milwaukee, WI, and then was transferred to Chicago, IL, in 1968. He then became employed with Milwaukee Motors, retiring to Underwood in 1985.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Maine and the Underwood American Legion. In addition he enjoyed very much being known as the “junkman” for many years.
Preceding him in death were his parents and step father Joseph Opatz; his wife; an infant daughter, Mary Jean; grandson, Quentin Stewart; beloved dog, Brady; one brother, Clarence (Mary) Stewart; one sister, Evelyn (Joe) Devorak; three brothers-in-law, Ed Haller, Al Spranger and Bob Juhl; one sister-in-law, Floreen Stewart.
Survivors include, eight children; Roccie (Jaki) Stewart of Aurora, IL, Druscilla (James) Retzlaff of West Bend, WI, Marlene (Richard) Tuma of Ladysmith, WI, Darwin (Nancy) Stewart of Golden Valley, AZ, Rodney (Julie) Stewart of Waterman, IL, Merreo (Jane) Stewart of Fergus Falls, Lynn (Eric) Vogt of Elk Grove, IL, and Kim (Guy) Lombardo of Yorkville, IL; 18 grandchildren: Mark, Jimmy, Rocky, Cindy, Jesse, Annette, Tammy, Rick, Dawn, Wendy, Kerri, Dustin, Vince, Sherry, Chippy, Tanya, Sam and Heather; 28 great-grandchildren; 98 foster children; two brothers, Raymond Stewart and Mark (Gloria) Opatz; four sisters, Janet Haller, Leona (Joseph) Lackner, Delphine Spranger, and Mary Juhl.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at St. James Catholic Church in rural Underwood
