A. Haid

Gottlieb Friedrich August Berthold “Bert” Haid, 95, of Fergus Falls, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. He was born in Haina, Germany on August 22, 1913, the son of Rev. Siegfried and Clara (Höhn) Haid. He was baptized and confirmed by his father in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haina. On June 21, 1941, he married Gertrud Bethke in Köln Germany. They made their home in Haina after WW II. In 1950 he escaped from the former East Germany to West Germany and nine months later his family joined him. In April 1956 the family immigrated to Rensselaer, New York. They also resided in Parsippany, Liberty Corner, and Schooley’s Mountain, New Jersey before moving to Fergus Falls in 1972. Berthold will be remembered for his trust in and love for the Lord, singing of German hymns and his life of prayer. He enjoyed his hobby farm, gardening, inventing and repairing things, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and in later years attended Swan Lake Lutheran.   Survivors include his four daughters, Brigitte Schiffner, Gudrun (Eugene) Boe, Clara Sesti of Fergus Falls, and Mechthild (Ralph) Pettigrew of Cranston, Rhode Island; two sons, Sieghart (Jean) of Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey and Gerhard of McAllen, Texas; one sister, Emmi Haid of Eisenach, Germany; grandchildren: Edward and John Schiffner, Carolyn (Dan) Ohlin, Melissa (Jason) Helmer, Christine (Amir) BenZvi, Annette Boe, Naomi (Ryan) Erkenbrack, Sonja (David) Narvesen, Joy ( Darryl) Case, Craig (Judy) Pettigrew, Jonathan (Rae Ann) Pettigrew, Jessica (Scott) MacNeill, Heather Pettigrew and Kelly (Chris) Rotta; great-grand-children: Alex, Abby, Callie and Cameron Ohlin, Alexandra and Zachery Helmer, Matan, Ella and Yotam BenZvi, Emma and Riley Erkenbrack, Nathaniel Narvesen, Katelynn Case, Shaina, Chelsea and Matthew Pettigrew, and Morgan Rotta; and one great-great grand-son, Raymond Anderson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gertrud; his parents; three brothers, Siegfried, Winfried and Johannis; one infant son, Karl Theodore; and one granddaughter Jennifer Haid. Memorials are preferred to the ministries of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, Bethel Lutheran or Swan Lake Lutheran Church. Berthold’s family would like to thank the staff of Broen Memorial Home for the wonderful care given to Berthold for the past two years.
