Michael Melby

Michael Melby, 78, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, September 3, 2023 at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

Michael Jay Melby was born July 3, 1945 to Jerry and Geraldine (Elliott) Melby in Fergus Falls. He attended school in Fergus Falls, graduating from Fergus Falls High School in 1963. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in July of 1964. While in the Air Force he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for Aviation Management, earning his Master’s Degree in 1988. He retired as a Senior Master Sargent in 1991. After the Air Force, he took a couple years off before working as a flight dispatcher at the University of North Dakota in their aviation program, until 2017 when he retired.

On October 2, 1965 Michael married Deanna Tomhave in Fergus Falls.

He was a member of Boy Scouts. Some of his hobbies included woodworking and fishing.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Deanna; son, Richard; father, Jerry, and nephews, Chuck Christenson and Elliott Melby.

Michael is survived by his children, Kirk (Melissa) and Jeremy (Michelle); daughter-in-law, Irene; mother, Geraldine Melby; four grandchildren, Kathryn (Anthony), Kyle, Erin, and Ethan; one great-grandson, Iverson; siblings, Dave, Tim (Carol), Mary Jo (Paul) Christenson, and Paul (Susan); special family friend, Laurie Hassell, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2023 at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls, with visitation one-hour prior to the service.

Military Participation: Fergus Falls VFW Post 612 and American Legion Post 30
Interment: First Lutheran North Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN
